South Indian weddings are a spectale in their own right with it's customs lost in translation. How then do you draw attention to each element of the wedding? Write a book in which the Americans Mrs. Rockfeller, no less organize a south Indian wedding for the spectacle. Written before the global amalgamation of cultures read before Sangeeth in South weddings - the book provides clean humor. One of the major tools used is exaggeration - imagine helicopters ferrying paatis to put out appalam for South Indian weddings are a spectale in their own right with it's customs lost in translation.
One of the major tools used is exaggeration - imagine helicopters ferrying paatis to put out appalam for drying or having dogs imported to bark at narikoravans. After a point it seems repetitive and you know what Saavi is planning.
The books also leverages the pointlessness of certain customs by ensuring they are integral part of the story. The bride and groom conveniently take the back seat and I don't even recall them being centre of any story. Focus on the spectacle never wavers. In one of the episodes, one character says the country which sent man to moon is fascinated by 'kolams' put by maamis. The book is also a reminder for the era of tamil weeklies which gave some of the best contemprory books written in tamil.
Read it for the big noisy South Indian wedding. A gentle story with a hilarious touch by Chavi would keep the readers of course born with Tamil as mother tongue laughing till the end. Though it was written in , when J. Kennedy was the President of U. The concept was novel and the characterisation, especially Mrs. Rockefeller, Mr. Punch Panchapakesan and the Shashtrigal totally absorbs the readers.
Dec 19, Prathiba Swaminathan rated it it was ok. The first book I have read in Tamil! Would recommend this book for its easy comprehension the Tamil is a lot like what we speak at home. However, the plot was a bit too outrageous to me, and I say this knowing that it was never meant to be taken seriously, and I did find some of the stereotyping quite irritating.

Mocking of an indigenous community from TN Narikurava is totally uncalled for, distasteful, and it makes one ponder how low an author has to go to flatter one community, by also belittling other. Feb 23, Vikram added it. This book should never exist at all. Exaggerated, outrageous, casteist. And they call this humour? Not funny at all. Jan 02, Manikandan Sivakumar rated it liked it.
